Dan Wann
was a K-12 and Adult ESL Teacher for many years and recently served as a Professional Development Consultant for Assessment and ESL with the Adult Education Professional Development Project.  After retiring this past June, he began his own consulting company, Two Leaves Consulting, LLC, and he will continue to focus on Professional Development for ESL teachers and Workplace and Adult Literacy issues.

He served as the Adult and Community Programs Representative on the INTSOL board 2004-2005.  In the past he has served as Chair of the Adult Education Interest Section for Teachers of English as a Second Language (TESOL), and he was a member of the TESOL Task Force on Adult Education Program Standards.  He is also a member of the National Consortium and Policy Review Council for the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS).  Dan has presented at State, Regional and National conferences, and as a teacher, he worked to integrate technology in the adult ESL classroom incorporating computers, Internet, and video distance learning as a regular part of the classroom experience.

Luciana C. de Oliveira
is assitant professor of literacy and language education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Purdue University. Luicana received her Ph.D. (Education: Language, Literacy & Culture; Second Language Acquisition) from the University of California, Davis, in 2006, when she moved to Indiana. Her research focuses on issues related to teaching ELLs at the K-12 level, including the role of language in the development of academic literacy in the content areas. Luiciana's engagement projects include work with educators, schools, and corporations to implement effective practices for ELLs. Luciana has presentd at local, state, national, and international levels. She has held several leadership positions at California TESOL (CATESOL), including Nonnative Language Educators' Issues Interest Group Coordinator (2002-2004), Assistant College/University Chair (2004-2005), and College/University Chair (2005-2006). At TESOL, she was Chair-Elect (2006-2007) and Chair (2007-2008) of the Nonnative English Speakers in TESOL Caucus and led the efforts of the caucus to become an interest section, which TESOL approve in June 2008. She has over fifteen years of ESL teaching experience at various levels. Luciana is eager to work with ESL teachers in Indiana and happy to be part of INTESOL.

Suzan Stamper
, a native Hoosier from Greencastle, earned her MA in TEFL at Ball State in 1983. Since then, Suzan has taught in Hong Kong, China, Kansas, and Indiana.  With interests in computer-assisted language learning (CALL), Suzan is a co-manager for NETEACH-L (a listserv for ESL/EFL teachers who use technology) and an active member of TESOL's CALL Interest Section, where she served as Chair in 2002-2003, a steering committee member since 1998, and an Electronic Village Special Events organizer since 1995.  Now an ESL lecturer at IUPUI, Suzan is looking forward to getting involved with INTESOL.

Kim Bassler
has been the Academic Director of ELS Language Centers at IUPUI for the last fifteen years. She is responsible for testing and scheduling international students in the intensive English program. In addition, she supervises the instructors, assists with curriculum development, and teaches.  She received her B.A. from Indiana University and she’s currently working on her Master’s at IUPUI.

As the Executive Secretary for INTESOL, her major responsibility includes maintaining the membership information for INTESOL members and associated institutions and agencies. Kim thinks that the best part of this position is having the opportunity to match the names in the database with all the faces of members at our annual conference in the fall.  Please contact Kim anytime you need to update your contact information for INTESOL.

Recording Secretary: Mary Henggler

Mary is an Associate Faculty Member in the ESL Program at IUPUI where she teaches composition courses. She is originally from Chicago where she served in many capacities and for many years in Illinois TESOL. Now she has joined the ranks of INTESOL.

As Recording Secretary her main duty is to take the minutes of the Board Meetings and the Annual Business Meeting. She is also compiling this information in notebook form for easy reference, and as a record of the Board and organization activities.

Shari Bochard-Pentecost
acquired her Bachelor’s Degree in English (Language) from Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) in 2005, graduating with Highest Distinction. She also has a TESOL Certification from IPFW and will complete her Master’s Degree in Adult and Community Education at Ball State University this summer. She teaches ESL Writing and Conversation classes to adult students at IPFW and does volunteer work in Fort Wayne, in the areas of Adult Literacy and ESL education. Her primary interests are in the adult education/learning process and m ore specifically, adult second language acquisition with minimal education in the L1.

Adult/Community Programs Representative: Deborah Graves

Marilynn Garvey (MA) has been an ESL teacher in the Indianapolis Washington Township Adult Education program since 1995.  Currently, she teaches life skills ESL to students with varying backgrounds and skills. She also has taught extensively in the workplace through DOE English Works, Adult Ed Works, Washington Township Continuing Education Programs, IN Literacy Foundation Volunteer Programs and privately. As a board member, she will help INTESOL address the needs of ESL teachers and students in adult education programs, volunteer literacy networks and developing workplace programs.

Graduate Student Representative:  Maria-Thereza Bastos

Maria-Thereza Bastos is a doctoral student in the Literacy, Culture, and Language Education Department from Indiana University-Bloomington. She is originally from Brazil where she taught EFL for 9 years. She has also taught EFL in China, and ESL in the US for adult learners. In 2004 she got her MA in TESL from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and she is currently an Associate Instructor for the Language Education Department where she teaches classes both online and onsite on Methods for Foreign and Second Language Instruction, Bilingual Education, and Socio-Psycholinguistics Applied to Reading Instruction for undergraduate and graduate students. Her research interests include theater/drama applied to the teaching of foreign/second languages, methods for teaching foreign and second languages (K-12), interlanguage pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and critical literacy applied to foreign/second languages.
 

Newsletter Editor: Sonya Lakey

Sonya Lakey has been teaching ESL for the Hamilton East Public Library in Noblesville & Fishers since 2001. She will receive TESOL Certification in December, and will complete her English MA at IUPUI. Mrs. Lakey has also taught academic English at the IU School of Law in Indianapolis. She currently teaches writing for ESL students at IUPUI. Sonya was recent editor of a small newspaper on religious and cultural issues.

Lynn Allen has been a member since 2006. She taught ESL in central Texas for 3 years. She currently works in Bloomington teaching ESL the Indiana University Intensive English Program and is a Masters graduate student in the Second Language Studies department.
