A native of Finland , Ulla Connor began her career in language teaching as a traveling ESL teacher in the public school system of Madison , Wisconsin . She went on to earn an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin , and is now recognized as a leader in second-language writing, in intercultural communication, and in English for Specific Purposes. She is director of the Indiana Center for Intercultural Communication, founder of the ESL Program at IUPUI, and a popular speaker who has delivered keynote addresses at more than 100 conferences around the world. She is currently at work on a book about intercultural communication in ESL.
